Ed’s regularly holds effective performance training sessions for all our business owners.
For old and new owners alike, this training offers valuable pointers that can be used to enrich our operators’ businesses.
Whilst the fresher-faced business owners can seize these opportunities to learn from the experiences and mistakes of our more seasoned owners, the established businesses may find new ideas to keep them thriving.
GROUP SESSIONS
Earlier this month, in February 2025, we welcomed our Ed’s business owners to a group training session.
A variety of our owners – new and established – turned out to this ‘Hot Topic’ session, enriching the discussion with their range of experience and professional backgrounds.
Our participants selected topics of particular interest that they considered to be key profit-drivers for their businesses. From what makes an ideal customer and how to hit a regular £500/day, to getting through winter and managing waste, our owners brought a lively and enthusiastic debate to the table.
General feedback as well as specific tactics were discussed in detail to allow our business owners to draw out new, helpful and interesting tips and tricks to strengthen their businesses.
BUSINESS OWNERS IN THE DRIVING SEAT
Sometimes, Ed’s business owners run the best practice sessions themselves. We try to make these training sessions as dynamic and business owner-led as we possibly can.

Bob, an experienced business owner from Horsham, is always keen to lend a helping hand to our newer owners. He enjoys playing an active role in our group training sessions to share his knowledge and recently led a collaborative session on estimating work.
GUEST SPEAKERS
We often invite guest speakers from both within and outside the gardening sector to share their experiences with us.

Allowing our business owners to share in their knowledge brings them a different and fresh perspective. It helps to consider new and interesting angles, and reinforces enthusiasm in our owners about growing their success.
HANDS-ON TRAINING
Our training sessions aren’t just about the hard business learning, though. We like to mix things up and bit and get outside too. We are outdoorsy types after all…

Our recent February session taught us all something new about advanced scarifying from a golf pro and groundsman; how many jobs let you spend an afternoon wandering around a golf course?

We also loved playing with all the latest toys – in this instance, an EGO electronic kit.

We’ve even turned our hand to a different type of target with some archery practice, in one of our previous training sessions.

In a nutshell, we like to keep our training not only focused and practical, but equally vibrant and fun.
PERFORMANCE TRAINING FROM THE BUSINESS OWNER PERSPECTIVE
That all said, the acid test is how Ed’s training is received by our own business owners. After every session we capture feedback so that we are constantly tailoring and improving our training sessions.
FROM THE NEW…

Nick, who runs his Ed’s business in Byfleet, Surrey, commented:
“There is a well known saying about the importance of knowing what you don’t know.
When I started with Ed’s last year, my initial goal was just to be able to run a decent gardening business.
However, as I’ve gone through my training and business coaching, my goalposts have moved to higher aspirations. I have my sights set on running a top class gardening business with profits I would never have dreamt of as an estate gardener in my previous life.
There is obvious value in the induction training package you get with Ed’s. However, once you are up and running, the ongoing training sessions and being able to share the knowledge of high performing business owners is a game changer.
It has set my sights much higher than I thought possible. At a tactical level, I pretty much have a route map of how to get myself there and a safety net for any pitfalls along the way.
The quality of some of Ed’s franchise businesses is so motivational to realise what really is possible.”
TO THE LONG ESTABLISHED…

Nigel, who runs his Ed’s business in Worthing told us…
“I always make the effort to come along to the Ed’s training sessions.
It is not mandatory. Yet many business owners make the effort to participate. That’s because it is really good for our businesses. It’s enjoyable too. I love the buzz of bouncing ideas off other business owners and discussing any opportunities or challenges I am facing in my business.
I’m running a strong and established business. However, every business benefits from fresh ideas. I always leave the Ed’s training sessions with some great new ideas to implement to make my business even stronger. The training and business support were key reasons for me going the franchise route.
I thought this would help me run a much better business. I was right.”
