Louis joined Ed’s in 2011 and has been nurturing a successful, thriving business ever since.
Setting up in Epsom and the surrounding area, Louis left his role in recruitment to pursue a different life. Wanting something energising, and feeling inspired from looking after his own garden, Louis decided to start a business with Ed’s.
Over the years, Louis has really enjoyed the active work and flexibility of being his own boss.
“As time goes by I value my holidays more and more,” he said. “I love having the best of both worlds: I have a successful gardening business and I also have the scope to take a number of holidays each year whenever I choose to go.”

We asked Louis about his experience at Ed’s and the business he’s built over the last fourteen years.
What’s your favourite thing about being a business owner?
“The increased flexibility and time.”
What was your main goal when setting up your business?
“To have more flexibility, earn money, and be independent.”
How has joining Ed’s affected your work-life balance?
“Over the years it has improved. I now have the freedom to choose my hours and holidays. For example, I choose to start my work day at 10:30.”
What do you feel has been the best part about joining Ed’s?
“The ability to be outdoors with more fresh air. I get more exercise, and there is more variety in comparison to office jobs.”
How has the training and support provided by Ed helped you within your business?
“Initially, greatly – as when you start you don’t know much about running a gardening business.
“Now I don’t need as much help or support, but I like knowing it’s there. Training can still be good and interesting.”

What would you say has been the biggest challenge of being an Ed’s franchisee?
“Probably the fact that you can’t govern nature and the elements. When it’s hot and dry and the grass doesn’t grow, there’s less work.
“There’s also that, initially, when you’re still learning, you have fewer customers. As you progress and improve, earlier customers may feel the amount they’re paying is unfair, as now it looks like less work just because you can do it quicker and more efficiently, due to your expertise and better equipment.”
What is your favourite service that you’re able to provide for customers?
“Mowing and cutting grass. The stripes look amazing, so it’s more satisfying afterwards!”

What values do you think are needed if you’re planning on buying your own Ed’s franchise?
“You have to be quite resilient and determined, and able to stand your ground.
“Also, you need to have good communication skills, for example, being comfortable with talking to customers. You also need to be very organised in order to manage your time.”
What do you feel is the main advantage of operating an Ed’s franchise?
“You’re working with a brand, so you’re presented as more trustworthy towards customers, due to standards and expectations of the brand.
“It’s also more professional looking.”
What would you say to someone considering buying an Ed’s franchise?
“It’s a big commitment, not something to take lightly. However, you will get the support and rewards.
“It’s not just something you can try out, you have to be prepared to put in the effort yourself, for your business. Remember, all businesses will go through highs and lows.”

Louis has learnt a lot on his journey with Ed’s, and we’re excited to see how his business continues to grow!
